OH MY GOD READ THIS BOOK!!!!

I got it from the library, but I will own a copy by tomorrow.

The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart

A little while ago, [livejournal.com profile] karenhealey posted saying that she had read a book with secret societies! Secret societies AND FEMINISM! I should read that book, I told myself, and forthwith, I read it.

AND I AM IN LOVE.

The entire thing is this...this incredible story, about power struggles, about being a teenage girl, about pranks and why they are played and how they affect the societies they are played in.

As a feminist who still totally struggles with what she wants, what society wants, how her love life fits into any of it, and who remembers how bad that struggle was as a teenager?

I LOVE THIS BOOK.

As an amateur folklorist--as a person who stayed up late under the covers at the age of thirteen with a book called something like Black Cats on Friday: Why Breaking Mirrors Is a Bad Thing, who when she wins the lottery is first going back to school and getting a masters' in folklore?

I LOVE THIS BOOK SO INCREDIBLY HARD.

Frankie is charming, full of incoherent adolescence and fierce pride and militant creativity. The boarding school society in which she moves is gorgeously portrayed.

PEOPLE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK RIGHT NOW. YOU. YOU RIGHT THERE. GO BUY THE BOOK AND READ IT.
