(no subject)

Can anyone explain to me all these people who want me to work from six to six, Monday through Saturday, for one hundred dollars a week? Not even "plus living expenses"--they expect you to be paying your rent, food, etc. On that amount.

That is less than two dollars an hour.

Also, they do not want me to discipline the children, but they want the house run, as far as I can tell, with military precision.

Just, what. Who let them have kids?

That's not even "less than $2/hour" in the sense of being $1.95, either. It's like $1.35 an hour. Even I am not old enough to have ever worked for that wage. WTF.

Ahahahaha. You can tell them good luck with finding someone, I'm sure people will be fighting over a job like that :p.

Welcome to Utah!! I'm planning on paying my nanny/babysitter about $5 an hour, but that is only because I'll be home while they are here, they will only be taking care of one child, and I'll probably be hiring a high school student. I don't know what these other people are thinking...

...Do they know what the minimum wage is in your state?

[identity profile] flamingsword.livejournal.com 2010-04-15 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, dropping these folks a line or two that makes explicit the laws in your state and their offer's failure to meet them might be beneficial to their compliance with consensual reality and protect them from their future of litigation by irate former employees.

Even in Texas, one of the worst right-to-work states, employers get sued for break time and OSHA noncompliance to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Honestly, if you are in talks with these people, I'd insert a polite but important statement like, "Now, just to make sure I'm clear with your expectations, I woudld be employed from the hours of 6 o'clock AM to 6 o'clock PM, six days a week, for a wage of one hundred dollars, which calculates to an hourly wage of $1.XX. Am I understanding that correctly?"

I run into the same problem, just with sewing. People are like "I want a custom-designed, custom-fitted Tudor costume." And then offer to pay less than the cost of materials.

...that is BEYOND ridiculous. I just. Holy shit, NO. People are insane. :/

O_O ... looks like these people are used to exploiting illegal immigrants with these conditions... Fortunately for you they can't threaten to have you deported.
