Okay, sorry for spamming, but another question which may be important. Need an answer from a Brit or someone who's spent a lot of time in British pubs.

My American drinking girl (whooo, [livejournal.com profile] allichan!!) says that grapefruit juice isn't even stocked by lots of American bars. Is it really rare as a mixer for Brits, too?

i don't think it's as rare at all. It's not as common as orange or tomato, but it's fairly common.

Yeah, I really meant more like dive bars. A lot of times I'll go into one for a grapefruit and vodka and have to settle for a screwdriver instead.

I've had it even in dive bars. Though true there a dive bars where you can only order Bud, Coors, or alcohol mixed with soda.

But I generally have no trouble getting cranberry or grapefruit juice. And I've lived in several different parts of the country - but not the mid-west.

Yeah, cranberry juice for sure is always stocked. And OJ I never have a problem with. I went to school in Maine for 4 years though, and the bars there are...colorful to say the least. Definitely your "bud coors etc" variety. I live in DC now, and although all the places in the city will have grapfruit juice, I've had trouble ordering it from certain places in the suburbs.

I think I have been in bars like that. Where the nice vodka is Smirnoff.

Would that be 'burbs in Maryland or Virginia? As tony as NoVa is (or thinks it is *g*), I'm amazed you might have had trouble finding grapefruit juice in bars there.

I'm in the Arlington area, so that's VA for sure. And hey NoVa IS cool! :B But you can definitely find dive bars if you're looking for them (which my guy friends constantly love to do). The worst is when they pick bars that don't even serve liqour. I'm very much a mixed drink person. The only beer I'll drink is Guinness, and if it's not on tap...grrrrrrr...

Ah well, Arlington makes more sense then--it has a more mixed population and doesn't have its nose stuck up its arse like Alexandria and Fairfax do. :-P (I grew up in Richmond and lived in Roanoke for nearly a decade. South of Fredericksburg it's sport to poke fun at NoVa)

Ha! I used to live in Fairfax Station, and can readily attest to the "nose up its arse" mentality. Arlington is way more laid back. One of my favorite bars here, Dr. Dremos, only sells beer and there are 3 beer pong tables set up in the semi-outdoors area!

Just to clarfiy: There are definitely "ranks" of bars. Starting at your local dive bar, and climbing up to your metropolitan hot spot. The lower ranks of bars have limited mixers. Standard mixers at those places might be something like tonic, OJ, cranberry, sprite, and coke. If you're lucky, pineapple juice. Then as you rise up the ranks they'll start adding milk, pineapple, tomato juice, grapefruit etc. Ritzy places will have garnishes like orange peel curls, mint leaves, fancy mixers... dive bars will have olives...and peanuts. =)

So it really depends on what type of bar you're at.

I see. Okay, good. The Leaky isn't WAY up there, but it's popular enough to be beyond the local dive level. THANK YOU!!
