Mar. 13th, 2005 09:37 pmMy apologies. My maunderings on mottoes, words to live by, etc. under the cut.
When I was eleven, and moving to a new, scary state after my extremely happy life in Colorado, and MISERABLE about it, a friend gave me a journal as a good-bye gift, with a poem on the cover. The famous Serenity Prayer. "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." She said she hoped that it would help me in accepting the move and changing how I felt about it. It got me through my taking-myself-too-seriously teenage years--the poem, not the journal, oc), but in my sophomore year of high school I saw one of the parodies of it, "...and the wisdom to hide the bodies of all the people who've pissed me off."
Not able to use it romantically and seriously after that, it stopped being so much of a guiding star.
Today I stumbled across what, I think, will be my "words to live by" for quite a while. It's naturally a little funny--but I've learnt to laugh at myself. And it really fits quite a lot of what I am and what I believe.
From Winston Churchill:
You will make all kinds of mistakes, but as long as you are generous and true and fierce you cannot hurt the world or even seriously distress her.
I like it.
