Jan. 21st, 2004 09:11 pmOh, my religion class is SO COOL!
We did this exercise, free-association with the word religion, and it was really cool the way it came out. One person's list was all "Hellfire and damnation", one was all "rules and regulation", one was denominations, Baptist, Lutheran, etc., one was "love, trust, family, God..." it was so interesting, seeing everybody's basic idea of what role religion plays and how different people are.
He also told us about this ritual that ends up with the women hogtying all the men up in a firepit with still-warm embers and making them negotiate a ransom. Girl power!
And then we watched a video on the Bali religion, which was really really interesting. There's a tradition that I loved...
If a woman wants to die, she asks that her beauty return to the Goddess, the loveliness of her hair to rain-bearing clouds, her tears to dewdrops at the tips of flowers.
Also, the temples are built crooked because demons can only move in straight lines, which I find amusing. The gods and humans know how to turn, but demons don't so they'll just smack into the walls.
When they harvest rice, they use a large knife so the transfer from life to death won't come as a shock.
The planting/irrigating/harvesting is controlled by the temple calendars. Apparently when they were first colonised, the Dutch convinced them that it was irrational and to do it the way the Dutch said and it ruined their crops. I thought that the triumph of faith was way cool.
Latin is HARD.
Amelia is having the worst time. I'm so worried. And I'd like to go on a small homocidal rampage at MHC. They shouldn't tell her one thing and then contradict it. They told her that the worst that could happen was medical leave and then they basically expelled her. They SUCK.
