I first met Beth when I was an ickly newbie at the CM message boards; I recced a fic of hers. She was very excited, because it was her first rec, and somehow in the tangle of "thanks for reccing" "no, thanks for writing" we became acquainted. The relationship was enhanced by the great and marvelous Y!M conversations of CM at that period...anybody and everybody joining in to whine about life, bounce fic ideas and discussions around, make dirty jokes, and in general be one of the best communities I have ever had the pleasure to be a part of. Beth and I got to know one another mostly through Y!M, a little on the board, and a little on LJ. That was...almost three years ago.
That simple little rec brought me one of the best damn friendships I will ever, ever have.
Beth and I have seen each other through hells of varying degrees and types: boys, roommates, parents, friends...she has always, always been there for me, made time for me. She was one of the threads I clung to with iron grip during my darkest time, and she is one of the biggest things that pulled me back from my suicidal edge. Knowing she was out there, caring about me, has literally been a big part of saving my life.
I can't say how much I admire her--for her courage in stepping away from her dark times and overcoming them, for moving forward with her life until she's running about LJ babbling of her full-time school, part-time work, three jobs on a lit magazine, loving but sometimes obnoxious fiancee (as almost all fiancees cannot help but be), and wedding plans. I've watched her gathering the strands of life to her, bit by bit, and holding them in place until her life is not only full, not only swelling with joy and work and love, but even spilling over into the realms of insanity. She is one of the strongest people I know, and I respect her for it, so very much.
But even more than what she has accomplished for herself, I love her for what she does for other people. Her capacity to make time for other people, to love them and worry about them and threaten people for them and open her heart to them is incredible and amazing...and that I get to be one of those people is the best blessing any Great and Powerful deity could have thought to bestow on me.
I love you, my Beth. And I am so, so grateful for you.
