Tongue-Tied For You, in which Brendon courts Ryan using traditional Utahn methods.

Dudes, I dunno if she even did this on purpose, but deliberate or not, this is hysterically funny to anybody who grew up in Utah. If Brendon's family moved after one or more of his siblings turned sixteen, or if his parents grew up in Utah, it's actually possible that this is his idea of romance.

The MIRROR, omg. I LAUGHED SO HARD, I CAN'T EVEN TELL YOU.

I know nothing about Utah. Do people there spend a lot of time writing on mirrors?

It's a cultural thing--when asking people on a date, particularly to official dances, that kind of thing, one does elaborate stunts--and the askee answers in the same way.

People set up scavenger hunts, put their names on Rubik's cubes, get the local McDonald's to display the question, decorate trees with ribbons and signs...one girl I knew got her "answer" in the form of a bathtub full of sixty goldfish. If the number of fish was even, the answer was yes. If the number was odd, it was no. She had to catch them in a net one at a time and count as she transferred them to an aquarium!

Well, it's honestly a Utah thing, not widely LDS; as I say, Brendon probably woudn't even be aware of it unless his siblings hit sixteen before the move, his parents grew up in Utah, or they keep in abnormally close touch (and I mean abnormally close for Mormons, even) with the cousins/second cousins, etc.

...are you SURE it's not a Mormon thing? Because all the LDS kids I went to school with used to do this and I'm from south-west Idaho. The one I remember best involved having our local cop (who was Mormon) pull over people to ask if they wanted to go the dance with suchandsuch. People also implemented rocks and flowers and bread rolls and singing and uh... a lot of other stuff. Anyway, the point I am getting at is that it felt like a culturally LDS thing to me.

I was raised LDS and have lived in several places across the U.S.--Idaho and some parts of Nevada, Colorado, and other nearby, heavily-LDS areas have a lot of the same traditions because of spillover, but places like, say, the Carolinas or New York would find it as odd as most people who've only vaguely heard of Mormonism.

I suppose it's possible the people in Brendon's area carried out this kind of thing, but I've found that Idaho tends to hold spillover much more than Nevada does in general.

True enough. There is the BYU campus in Rexburg, which I suspect would generate a lot of spillover.

(Hi by the way. I'm kind of new to bandom and I enjoy your fic very much. Thus the lerking.)

Thanks for the rec! I always appreciate some good Utah humor. I once got my car "Oreo'd" as an answer to asking someone to MORP, so I'm sure this mirror thing should be great fun to read about!

LOL OH MY GOD, IT IS. The only thing it's missing is the balloons, with W-I-L-L-Y-O-U-G-O-T-O-P-R-O-M-W-I-T-H-M-E-? in individual letters inside each balloon. :'D AND IT'S A MORMON THING, NOT JUST A UTAH THING, SO YEAH, THIS IS TOTALLY POSSIBLE. Omg, now I want to write one (jon/brendon tho, because OTP) where it's deliberate.

okay, i are done stalking ur journal nao. >_>

I only just realised you weren't on my flist, in fact...you might want to poke around a little more and realise just HOW Greta-Brendon-Zack-Spencer-crazy I am before you commit...half the really scary entries are flocked away from my old high school crowd. *G*
