I hate how adapting my resume to appeal to offices and retail places means CUTTING MORE THAN HALF OF IT OUT.

I have a very specialized skill set. It's not that part of that skill set isn't transferable--multitasking, organization, communication, etc.--it's just that I have so much MORE to offer a childcare position. There's no point in telling somebody who wants a secretary that I aced my Teaching Art and Music class, for example.

BAH, HUMBUG.

Okay, that's probably pretty bad, too.

But at least you've WORKED. All I've ever done for more than two months was teach. ALL. I haven't had a job in four years that wasn't childcare. I worked two retail jobs in my life; both were summer stints where I made absolutely no impression on my management and both were at least six years ago.

I kind of want to cry. All the childcare positions need me to be in class at least 50% less and none of the non-childcare positions want me.

True, but a) my first real job (while I was living with my parents at age 22, mind you) was part time and at a car dealership. And I ended up in the industry for four years. And my job last summer/fall was dishwashing. LOL. I don't even want to know what lows I'm going to have to sink to after I'm done here.

Sucks, don't it? XB :loves on you:

Man, that reminds me, I should really get on that reworking my resume thing.

My resume is too short to modify it for each thing I apply for. :P

Just leave it in, and add a section about how childcare has taught you better ways to communicate with difficult clients. It's a bit humorous, but also true and shows off a rare quality. Every company has contacts that they would rather foist off on someone else, and having a vast well of patience is marketable.

Want me to take a look? If so, send me the original, unaltered resume. It's all about taking skills and making them relative to other skills. Kind of like what [livejournal.com profile] flamingsword said, but in a slightly less cheeky way.

For example, you can talk about the number of kids you were in charge of, teamwork skills, communicating with parents (i.e. customers), and that kind of thing.

Thanks, but I've already done that, pretty much; it's just tiring, you know? Frustrating. I don't want to use those aspects of what I do in order to perform a job I don't want. I want to use my gifts and training to do a job I am damn good at and enjoy. *sigh*
