I really do try not to do the copy-paste thing often; I know it can get irritating. But some issues are too important not to spread the word as widely as I can.

The military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy is an unfair, outdated measure that violates the civil rights of some of our bravest, most heroic men and women.

That’s why I am so proud to support Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who has been working with her colleagues in the Senate and activists across the country to overturn this unfair policy. Today, there is great news: We have convinced Senator Carl Levin, Chairman of the Armed Services Committee, to hold the first Senate hearings on repealing DADT this Fall.

We have to prepare for these hearings, so Sen. Gillibrand has launched a nationwide call to action. I was eager to stand with her to show that this country is ready to repeal DADT. Please join us.

I'm embarrassingly uninformed about government policy (even those proposed by my own Senators), so I ask this: do you know whether she's brought up/included in her proposal anything to help smooth the transition. It's a lovely ideal, and my cousin who just returned from serving overseas says that there are servicemen (and women) who very obvious aren't straight but are generally left alone, but such a drastic change in policy is bound to provoke someone's ire. So I'm wondering whether the proposal mentions allocating resources to aid the transition. (I know it may not have even reached that stage yet!)

I don't know the specifics, although I gather it's in the beginning stages.

I'm excited about this! My next biggest worry, however, is a backlash of hate crimes against out-and-about LGBT military personnel. My even bigger worry is that any real justice against perpetrators would get bogged down and lost in our bureaucracy like most everything else. I hope I'm wrong.
