Lyn, I'm also worxing on the SH fic, I promise!
(P. S. These are being ETA, so you don't need to worry about repeating someone else.)
ETA: Thanks to whoever pimped me to the Snitch!
I'm collecting fandom terms that people might have trouble understanding. Please add to my collection!

Hey, would you be interested in putting this essay on our archive at The Firelight when you're done?
Hmmm... I'm sure I'll think of more since even now, I still don't know some terms. XP

Date: 2004-08-13 10:56 am (UTC)Technically "meta"discussion is discussion about the way we discussin things (e.g., your list here is meta) but in fandom, it's also come to include critical essays on writing and reading and analyzing source text.

I'd also make "RPS" into "RPF" to include the het side, and also put het and gen on the list.
angst
hurt/comfort
here's a big fannish glossary (http://www.writersu.net/?link=dict) you might find useful, and another (http://www.subreality.com/glossary.htm)...

Date: 2004-08-13 10:58 am (UTC)Have you seen this? http://www.subreality.com/glossary.htm It's multifandom and therefore doesn't include the HP-specific terms, but it might be either a place to get ideas, or a place to link to for "everything else".

Date: 2004-08-13 11:13 am (UTC)You could add gen to the list because I didn't know what it meant until I asked. Oh someone else already said gen but I don't know what else to say so I'll pretend I didn't see that. :D

Date: 2004-08-13 11:50 am (UTC)dark!Harry; darkfic; badfic; angst; WsIP; pimp; woobies; puppies; Time eras: the Marauder years, Hogwarts years, post-war, first war; Grindelwald(sp?) years; Marty Stu (in addition to Mary Sue/Gary Stu); alpha!Remus; M/s; BDSM; D/s; bottom; top; 3TP (vs. OTP); abbreviations for various fic archives; Britspeak; britpick; britpicking; grammar nazi; Americanisms; femmeslash; dom vs. domme; mpreg; lj (usually seen in lowercase letters, vs. LJ); link to (?) a term list for things that aren't really fandom but netspeak, but we think they're fandom because we don't know what they are; perhaps links to a few British-English dictionaries, and
- Some of these might not be necessary, redundant, or self-explanatory, eh, oh well.
Something I'm still wondering about: What does it mean to 'fangirl' someone? I'm definitely no newbie, but there are a few terms in there that I don't know (well I had a list here, but discovered it was embarrassingly long), so I'm really looking forward to seeing your completed list! No idea what 'meta' is, sorry.
Thanks for putting this together, it looks like a great idea!

Date: 2004-08-13 01:21 pm (UTC)(Remix is where you take something written/drawn by someone else--a drabble or art usually--and rewrite it, filling out the corners, new PoV (and there's another one!) etc.)

Date: 2004-08-13 02:44 pm (UTC)Pixies - Pornish Pixies lj comm
Mugglenet - I don't know if there is an abbreviation for this one.
HPL? - The Harry Potter Lexicon, aka 'The Lexicon'
TLC - The Leaky Cauldron
WWR - Werewolf Registry
ISF - Ink Stained Fingers
FF.net - variation of Ffn
SQ - I'm pretty sure that one has another meaning, but I don't know what it is. The one I know is Sugar Quill.
NA - Nocturn Alley - the RP(?) everybody misses and I haven't found the time to go read.
FQF - Fuh-Q-Fest(s), all of them
Other terms I've been combing my flist for:
non-con, double penetration (too self explanatory?), breathplay, watersports, knifeplay, bloodplay/bloodsport, gangbang?, not worksafe, smut (I had to figue that one out, believe it or not), drabble, ficlet (Someone reviewed Corvus Favuere [sp?] and said what a nice 'ficlet' it was!), vignette, novella, short story, trio, The Golden Trio, fetish, deathfic (just in case it's not self-explanatory because that warning is imperative to me, I get very upset when people don't warn for it, and what if I didn't know what it was? Yes, I am paranoid.), blog, flist, f-list, abbreviations for books (SS/PS, CoS, PoA, Gof, OotP, HBP, FBaWtFT/FB/FBAWTFT[?], QttA), JKR (I used this one yesterday while speaking to my mother, and I confused the heck out of her when I said, "Jay kay are wrote..."), sex magick, feedback, review, concrit, constructive criticism, flame, flaming, SIT BOI (acronym for the theory: Sirius Is Time-travelling, Bode is Oddly Important, I forget who made it up, but if you ask around, someone can prolly tell you, because it happened in the last week. Sry, I'm lazy), Steve Vander Ark (also Lexicon Steve), waxing vs. waning moon, gibbous moon, perigee, apogee(sp?), any fanon creations that we may have forgotten aren't canon? (I can't think of any off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are some),
Here's (http://www.livejournal.com/users/beren_writes/47660.html) a pretty chart/discussion for fic lengths.
Does 'flangst' mean the good warm fuzzy angst that make you cry happy tears? Yea! I finally have a name for my craving. *Cries.*
Wow, what a mess. I hope all that is legible. My inner neat-freak is having hysterics over all those parentheses I used.

Date: 2004-08-13 03:10 pm (UTC)I'm not actually doing smut terms, but I have a friend (Aletino) compiling a similar dictionary for the higher-rated fics, so I'll send her here to take a look, and the ones that don't apply only to smut I'll be glad to use.
Flangst...yes, more or less. It can also mean angst over things that are less important (Ginny's angst over unrequited Harry-love rather than Remus's angst over Sirius's death, say).
